DWP Confirms Automatic £200 Payments for Pensioners Under 80
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that state pensioners under the age of 80 will receive automatic £200 payments this winter as part of the Winter Fuel Payment scheme. Eligible individuals will receive a letter in October or November 2026 detailing the amount they will receive.
The payment is based on the qualifying week of 21 to 27 September 2026. If you do not receive a letter but believe you are eligible, the DWP advises checking whether you need to make a claim. The payment does not affect other benefits.
Payment Amounts Based on Age
The amount you receive depends on your date of birth. Those born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960 will get £200. Individuals born before 28 September 1946 will receive £300. For households with two eligible people, the total payment is split: if both are 80 or over, each gets £150 (£300 total); if one is 80 or over and the other under 80 (and eligible), the older gets £200 and the younger gets £100 (£300 total); if both are under 80 and eligible, each gets £100 (£200 total). If only one person is eligible, that person gets £200 if under 80 or £300 if 80 or over.
Income Threshold and Clawback
The DWP previously announced that eligible individuals would automatically receive the Winter Fuel Payment for 2025-26, but it would be recovered by HMRC if a person's income exceeded £35,000. This clawback mechanism applies to the household split: for example, if one person has an income over £35,000 and the other does not, only the higher earner will have the payment recovered.
Opt-Out Process for 2026-27
A new opt-out is required each year for individuals in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. An online form to opt out of receiving the Winter Fuel Payment for 2026-27 will be available from 1 April 2026. Taxpayers in Scotland do not need to repeat the opt-out process; once they have contacted Social Security Scotland and opted out of receiving the pension age winter heating payment, the election remains in force for future years.
