UK households risk losing up to £1,054.95 due to a strict three-month rule announced by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) regarding Child Benefit claims. The tax office has warned that thousands of new parents across the country are missing out on payments by failing to claim Child Benefit within their baby's first year.
Understanding the Three-Month Rule
Child Benefit can be claimed 48 hours after a child's birth is registered or when a child comes to live with you. However, claims can only be backdated for a maximum of three months from the date HMRC receives the claim. This means parents who delay their application lose out on payments for any period beyond that three-month window.
For example, if you claim when your child is 12 months old, you can only receive backdated payments for three months, missing nine months of support. Over a year, the eldest or only child receives £1,406.60, but with the backdating limit, you would lose £1,054.95 for the months you failed to claim.
Current Child Benefit Rates
As of April 6, 2026, Child Benefit rates increased by 3.8%. The weekly rate for the eldest or only child is now £27.05, while each additional child receives £17.90 per week. Payments are made every four weeks, meaning families with one child get £108.20 per period, and those with additional children receive £71.60 per period per child.
Over a full year, the benefit is worth £1,406.60 for the eldest child and £930.80 for each additional child, with no limit on the number of children.
HMRC Statistics
According to HMRC, 6.8 million families currently claim Child Benefit, but more than 30% of new parents miss out by not claiming before their baby's first birthday. Between April and June 2025, over 140,000 babies were born, and many families are failing to access this crucial financial support.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, urged parents to claim promptly: "Spring is a wonderful time to welcome a baby and claiming Child Benefit as soon as possible means your family can benefit from much-needed financial support. It is quick and easy to claim Child Benefit via the HMRC app at a time that suits you."
Additional Benefits
Child Benefit not only provides financial support but also grants National Insurance credits, which count towards future State Pension eligibility. This is especially important for parents not in paid employment or receiving NI credits through other routes like Universal Credit. Additionally, claiming Child Benefit ensures the child automatically receives their National Insurance number at age 16.
To avoid losing out, parents should claim Child Benefit as soon as possible after their child's birth registration. The HMRC app offers a convenient way to submit claims quickly.
