A 33-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following a horrific crash on the A38 that claimed four lives, including a baby girl, has been released on bail, Derbyshire Constabulary confirmed.
Crash details
The incident occurred at approximately 11pm on Saturday when a red Hyundai carrying five people left the carriageway and struck trees near the Toyota Island junction in Derby. Emergency services attended the scene, but two women, aged 18 and 30, and a 36-year-old man were pronounced dead at the scene. A baby girl was rushed to hospital but later died of her injuries.
All four victims were from Leeds, West Yorkshire, and their families are being supported by specially trained officers. The driver, who suffered serious injuries, remains in hospital receiving treatment.
Investigation underway
Police arrested the driver on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving while he was being treated. He has since been bailed pending further inquiries. Derbyshire Constabulary is appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the Hyundai prior to the crash to come forward. The road was closed for several hours for forensic examination, causing significant disruption.
“Our thoughts remain with the families of those who lost their lives, and we are doing everything we can to establish the full circumstances of this tragic incident,” a police spokesperson said. “We urge anyone who saw the vehicle or has footage to contact us.”
