Lloyds Bank has officially announced the closure date for its Handsworth branch in Birmingham, putting an end to speculation about an earlier shutdown. The branch will close on June 23, 2027, as confirmed by a bank spokesperson to BirminghamLive.
Closure Details and Context
Earlier online reports suggested the branch might close as soon as 2026, but Lloyds clarified the timeline. A Lloyds spokesperson stated: “The Handsworth branch will close on the 23rd of June 2027.” This decision is part of a broader trend of branch closures across the Lloyds Banking Group, which includes Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland brands.
Since 2015, nearly 1,600 branches have shut their doors across the group. In the last month alone, 79 locations closed, including 31 Lloyds Bank branches and 48 Halifax sites. In February, the group announced plans to close 95 further branches. According to consumer magazine Which?, Lloyds Banking Group will close a total of 232 branches in 2026 and 13 in 2027, with the latest wave including 48 Halifax and 31 Lloyds branches.
Customer Alternatives and Bank's Statement
A Lloyds spokesperson explained the rationale: “With access to one of the biggest branch networks in the UK, alongside local banking options like the nearby Post Office, Banking Hub in Handsworth once it is up and running, PayPoint, plus our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service, we offer our customers more choice and convenience than ever before.”
Another spokesperson added: “Customers want the freedom to bank in the way that works for them and we offer more choice and ways to manage money than ever before. From our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service to local banking options like our community bankers, PayPoint and access to all of our Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland branches, we're giving our customers the flexibility to bank wherever and whenever they need us.”
Impact on Handsworth Community
The closure of the Handsworth branch is part of a nationwide reduction in physical banking services, affecting communities that rely on in-person banking. While Lloyds points to digital alternatives and local services like the Post Office and a planned Banking Hub, some residents may face challenges, particularly those less comfortable with online banking. The branch's closure in 2027 will leave Handsworth without a dedicated Lloyds Bank branch, though the Banking Hub is expected to provide some face-to-face services.
