West Midlands Zoo has announced it will close to visitors on Monday and Tuesday due to extreme hot weather warnings, with temperatures forecast to reach 35°C. The decision prioritizes the safety of animals, staff, and guests, as the heat poses significant risks.
Closure Details and Reasons
The zoo, located in Dudley, will remain closed on Monday 18 July and Tuesday 19 July. In a statement, the zoo said: “The safety and welfare of our animals, staff, and visitors is our top priority. With extreme temperatures expected, we have made the difficult decision to close.” The move follows a red extreme heat warning issued by the Met Office for parts of England, the first such warning ever declared.
Zoo staff will continue to care for the animals during the closure, ensuring they have access to shade, water, and cooling measures. The zoo is home to over 1,000 animals, including lions, tigers, and giraffes, which are particularly vulnerable to heat stress.
Animal Welfare Measures
Keepers will monitor the animals closely and take additional precautions, such as providing ice blocks, misters, and extra water pools. Some animals may be moved indoors to climate-controlled enclosures. The zoo also encourages visitors who have booked tickets for those days to reschedule or request a refund.
This closure is part of a broader response across the region, with other attractions and events also adjusting schedules due to the heatwave. The zoo expects to reopen on Wednesday 20 July, subject to weather conditions.
Impact on Visitors and Operations
Ticket holders for Monday and Tuesday are being contacted directly. The zoo advises checking its website and social media for updates. The closure will result in lost revenue, but the zoo emphasizes that animal welfare comes first.
“We understand this is disappointing for visitors, but the extreme heat makes it unsafe for both people and animals to be outside for long periods,” a spokesperson added. The zoo will use the time to implement additional cooling systems and review emergency procedures.
