State Pensioners Claiming Pension Credit and Caring Can Get Extra £2,503 a Year
Pension Credit Carers Can Get Extra £2,503 a Year

State pensioners claiming Pension Credit who also act as carers for another adult are entitled to an additional £48.15 per week from the Department for Work and Pensions. This extra payment, which totals approximately £208.65 per month or £2,503.80 annually, is paid on top of both the state pension and standard Pension Credit.

Government Confirms Benefit Rate Increases

Baroness Sherlock, minister of state, confirmed in November that the Standard Minimum Guarantee would rise "by 4.8 per cent in line with the increase in average earnings", while other benefit rates would increase "by 3.8 per cent, in line with the increase in the consumer prices index in the year to September 2025". These adjustments ensure that the additional carer payment keeps pace with economic changes.

Eligibility for Guarantee Pension Credit

You may be eligible for Guarantee Pension Credit if you have reached State Pension age and live in the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man. You can check your current State Pension age on the GOV.UK website. Generally, you must have a low income to qualify for this benefit, but exceptions apply if you are a carer, disabled, or have certain housing costs.

Income and Savings Considerations

Income taken into account for Guarantee Pension Credit includes earnings, certain benefits such as Carer's Allowance, tax credits, State Pension, and private pensions. However, some income is disregarded, including any disability benefits, Child Benefit, and child maintenance. If you have savings, you can still receive Guarantee Pension Credit, but savings over £10,000 will reduce the amount you get. For couples, both individuals must be over State Pension age to claim; if only one is over State Pension age, they will need to claim Universal Credit instead.

Checking Your Eligibility

The GOV.UK website offers a Pension Credit calculator to help you determine if you might qualify. This tool takes into account your income, savings, and caring responsibilities to provide an estimate of the benefits you could receive.

Savings Pension Credit Phase-Out

Savings Pension Credit is being phased out, so few new claimants can access it. You may still be eligible if you or your partner reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016. For most people, Guarantee Pension Credit and the additional carer payment provide the most substantial support.

This additional £2,503.80 per year can make a significant difference to state pensioners who dedicate time to caring for others. The DWP encourages eligible individuals to apply and ensure they receive all the support they are entitled to.
