State Pensioners Born After 1951 to Get Two £964 Payments in May
State Pensioners Born After 1951 Get Two £964 Payments in May

State pensioners born after 1951 may receive two identical payments of £964 in May 2026, thanks to a calendar quirk. The new state pension rate, which has increased by 4.8% due to the Triple Lock, is now worth £964 per month. Because the first Friday of May falls on May 1, pensioners with National Insurance numbers ending in 00 to 19 could receive two payments, totaling £1,928.

Eligibility for the New State Pension

The new State Pension is a regular payment from the government that most people can claim in later life. To be eligible, you must have at least 10 years of National Insurance contributions and be a man born on or after April 6, 1951, or a woman born on or after April 6, 1953. You can claim up to four months before reaching State Pension age, but payments begin only after you reach that age.

Backdating and Payment Rates

If you claim your State Pension after reaching State Pension age, you can request backdating for up to 12 months, but not before you reached State Pension age. The full rate of the new State Pension is £241.30 per week in the 2026-27 financial year. However, your actual payment may be higher or lower depending on your National Insurance record.

Understanding Your Starting Amount

If you have built up National Insurance contributions under the pre-2016 system, you will receive a 'starting amount'. This is the higher of: the amount you would have received under the pre-2016 system (including basic and additional pension), or the amount you would get if the new State Pension had been in place from the start of your working life. If your starting amount exceeds the full new State Pension, the excess is protected and paid on top. If it is less, you can increase it through contributions and credits made between April 6, 2016, and your State Pension age.
