Jewish communities across England are to receive an additional £1 million in government funding as ministers intensify efforts to address rising antisemitism. The funding will support community safety measures and projects aimed at countering antisemitic narratives, amid growing concerns over a recent spike in incidents.
Downing Street Summit on Antisemitism
The announcement coincides with Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosting senior figures from various sectors of public life at Downing Street today (May 5) for discussions on a 'whole of society' response to antisemitism. The meeting follows the stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green last week. Sir Keir is expected to emphasize that everyone has a responsibility to stand with Jewish communities, describing attacks on British Jews as 'a crisis for all of us' and 'a test of our values'. The talks will bring together senior ministers, police leaders, and representatives from the arts, higher education, trade unions, and business, including the Confederation of British Industry.
Additional Funding for Barnet Council
Alongside the £1 million national funding package, ministers confirmed a further £500,000 will be allocated to Barnet Council following a series of antisemitic incidents in the area. Communities Secretary Steve Reed stated that the funding would help deliver immediate support where it is most needed. He said: “While we know there is more to do, we believe that quickly channelling government funding directly to the communities and places facing the greatest risks today will help local partners to take early, practical action to keep people safe, strengthen communities and stand up to hate.”
Broader Government Response
Later in the day, the Prime Minister will chair a meeting of the Government’s Middle East Response Committee, focusing on the domestic security implications of the conflict involving Iran, including the potential impact on Jewish communities in the UK. This latest funding follows a £25 million package announced last week to boost security for Jewish communities in response to the Golders Green attack. The government continues to work with local authorities and community groups to ensure the safety and well-being of Jewish people across the country.
