DWP £300 Winter Fuel Payment for Pensioners Born Before Sept 1946
DWP £300 Winter Fuel Payment for Pre-1946 Pensioners

The Department for Work and Pensions has announced a bonus payment of £300 for state pensioners born before September 28, 1946, as part of the Winter Fuel Payment scheme. This one-off payment aims to support older pensioners during the colder months.

Eligibility Criteria

According to the DWP, individuals who live alone or with no one eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment will receive either £200 if born between September 28, 1946, and June 27, 1960, or £300 if born before September 28, 1946. The amount is determined by the recipient's date of birth and circumstances during the qualifying week of September 21–27, 2026.

The DWP states: “Any money you get will not affect your other benefits.” However, eligibility is restricted to residents of England and Wales. Exclusions apply for those who were in hospital receiving free treatment for the entire qualifying week and the preceding year, individuals with immigration restrictions preventing public funds, and those imprisoned for the whole qualifying week.

Means-Testing and Tax Implications

For pensioners with an income over £35,000, HM Revenue and Customs will reclaim the Winter Fuel Payment by adjusting tax codes or adding the amount to Self Assessment tax returns. This means-testing approach is a deliberate policy choice.

Labour Party Chancellor Rachel Reeves commented: “Targeting Winter Fuel Payments was a tough decision, but the right decision because of the inheritance we had been left by the previous government. It is also right that we continue to means-test this payment so that it is targeted and fair, rather than restoring eligibility to everyone including the wealthiest. But we have now acted to expand the eligibility of the Winter Fuel Payment so no pensioner on a lower income will miss out. This will mean over three quarters of pensioners receiving the payment in England and Wales later this winter.”

The DWP emphasizes that the payment is not available to those living outside England and Wales, and recipients should check their individual circumstances to ensure they qualify. The measure is expected to benefit a significant majority of pensioners in the region.
