UK Bank Holidays to Change: Summer Bank Holiday Confirmed After World Cup Exit
UK Bank Holidays Change: Summer Bank Holiday Set for August 31

Following England's elimination from the World Cup in the semi-finals, the next bank holiday in England and Wales is confirmed as August 31, the summer bank holiday. Hopes for an additional bank holiday had been raised if England won the tournament, but the team's defeat dashed those expectations.

World Cup Hopes Dashed

England lost their semi-final match, though they later secured third place. Labour Party Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer had hinted at a potential bank holiday for a victorious World Cup campaign, but it was not to be. The team's performance ended with a 6-4 win over France in the third-place playoff, but it was not enough to trigger a national celebration.

Remaining Bank Holidays in 2026

Despite the disappointment, there are still bank holidays to look forward to. In addition to August 31, Christmas Day falls on a Friday, December 25. However, because Boxing Day is on a Saturday, the bank holiday for Boxing Day has been delayed to Monday, December 28. This is known as a ‘substitute day’. This means there are only three bank holidays left for the year.

The substitute day arrangement applies to all four Home Nations: England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The government states: “If a bank holiday is on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday. Your employer does not have to give you paid leave on bank or public holidays. Bank holidays might affect how and when your benefits are paid.”

Petition for Bank Holiday

A petition had called for a bank holiday after England's World Cup campaign, arguing: “Winning the World Cup would be a historic, once-in-a-generation sporting achievement for the nation. A victory of this scale deserves a moment of national celebration, bringing communities together and boosting morale across the country. Furthermore, a significant portion of the population will be staying up late to watch and celebrate the final. Declaring the following Monday a bank holiday would allow the public to celebrate safely, and support local businesses.”

However, with England's exit, the petition's goal remains unfulfilled. The next opportunity for a national celebration will be the summer bank holiday on August 31.
