Last Friday marked the local election count in Hyndburn, revealing the new councillors chosen to represent our area. I extend my congratulations to everyone who put themselves forward for public office. It takes courage to stand and ask neighbors for their trust. Local public service is a cornerstone of our democracy.
Campaign Trail Insights
Over recent weeks, I spent considerable time on the campaign trail with Labour councillors and candidates, knocking on doors and listening to residents across our area. These conversations are among the most valuable aspects of politics. People discuss what matters in their daily lives, from potholes and drains to schools, housing, and family support.
To those who won, congratulations—I look forward to working with you. To those who did not achieve the desired result, my commiserations and sincere thanks for standing and contributing to local democracy. Our area is better for your efforts.
Community Spirit Shines
Community life here is something to be proud of. I recently attended a fantastic fundraising event organized by Zack Kerr and Tracy Simmonds, raising over £17,000 for the North West Ambulance Service. It was a brilliant day full of energy and generosity. I even ended up on the pitch with former professionals in a high-scoring game that finished 7-5. Moments like these showcase our community at its best.
It was also a pleasure to celebrate 90 years of Lee Royd Nursery, meeting families with three generations connected to the setting and thanking staff for their vital work with young children. I am determined to ensure more children across Hyndburn and Haslingden benefit from high-quality early years provision like this.
Visits and Upcoming Events
I have also spent time with the Prospect Foundation at Brookside Nature Reserve, visited Park View Day Centre in Clayton le Moors, and met staff and pupils at Tor View SEND School. Each visit reminded me of the dedication shown by staff, volunteers, and families supporting people across our community.
Important conversations lie ahead. I will host events on support for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities as part of the government’s consultation. Families, carers, and professionals are invited to share their experiences, both in person and online, because those voices must shape future decisions.
I am also supporting an upcoming event on young people, smartphones, and social media on Thursday, May 14, at 6.30pm at Union Road Community Church in Oswaldtwistle. This is an opportunity for parents and carers to share experiences and help inform national thinking on children’s online safety.
Local Services and Engagement
At a recent public meeting on the future of the Accrington Victoria site, around 100 residents shared their views. That level of engagement matters—people want to be involved in shaping their town’s future.
Alongside this, I continue to raise issues about local services. It is unacceptable that residents are told they could wait up to two years for blocked drains and gullies to be cleared. Basic services should not fall behind in this way.
I am here to help however I can. Constituents can email me at sarah.smith.mp@parliament.uk, call 01254 926487, or visit my office at 9 Blackburn Road, BB5 1HF. I also hold regular surgeries across the constituency.
