Labour Councillor Promises 'Fresh Start' for Solihull in Local Elections
Labour's Hazel Dawkins Vows 'Fresh Start' for Solihull

Labour’s only councillor in Solihull, Hazel Dawkins, has declared that her party would deliver the “fresh start” the borough urgently needs. With every council seat up for grabs on May 7, voters will head to the polls to decide the future of local governance.

Key Priorities for Labour

Dawkins, who was elected in Kingshurst and Fordbridge in 2024 as the first Labour councillor in Solihull since 2021, emphasised that her party is “refreshed, determined, and raring to go.” She stated that Labour’s priorities include building real affordable housing, improving public transport connectivity, and fixing roads using existing funding. “Across every ward, our three candidates offer realistic, locally rooted pledges shaped by listening to residents,” she added.

Financial Challenges and Council Tax

When questioned about Solihull Council’s finances, Dawkins confirmed she had voted against council tax rises, arguing that residents should not bear the burden of unresolved underlying problems. She stressed the need for cross-party cooperation to ensure every pound spent genuinely benefits residents. “Future rises depend on those running the council, but my position is clear: residents shouldn’t be the first place the council turns to,” she said.

Potential Coalition Negotiations

On the possibility of a hung council, Dawkins indicated her willingness to negotiate with other parties to form an administration, citing her record of working across party lines on issues like domestic violence. She affirmed that residents’ concerns remain her priority and that Labour would act in the best interests of the community.

Residents’ Concerns

During canvassing, Dawkins reported that many residents feel left behind by the council, pointing to the Kingshurst Parade development as a prime example. Key issues include unaffordable housing, inadequate social housing, insufficient SEND provision, poorly maintained roads, unreliable public transport, and community safety worries. “After years of Conservative failures, Green inaction, and Reform offering more of the same, Labour will fight for and deliver the fresh start Solihull deserves,” she asserted.

Appeal to Undecided Voters

Dawkins urged undecided voters to consider Labour’s track record of securing action on housing complaints, challenging biomass heating failures, protecting the environment, and helping families access support. “This is what a strong, compassionate voice looks like. Imagine what more we could achieve with more Labour councillors,” she concluded.
