HM Passport Office Urges Online Applications to Save £12.50 Per Household
Passport Office: Save £12.50 by Applying Online

The HM Passport Office has issued a clear reminder to UK households about a simple way to reduce the cost of obtaining or renewing a passport. By opting for the digital application route, individuals can save a significant £12.50 compared to the traditional paper-based method.

Substantial Savings with Online Applications

In a recent communication, the Passport Office emphasised that applying online is not only more convenient but also notably cheaper. The standard online service is priced £12.50 lower than completing a paper form and posting it. This price difference represents a direct cost-saving for millions of Britons each year.

Efficient Processing Times

Alongside the financial benefit, the Passport Office has confirmed that most applicants using the standard online service can expect to receive their new passport within approximately three weeks. The processing period officially begins from the moment the required documents are received by the office.

It is crucial to note that these are target timelines and not absolute guarantees. Officials strongly recommend applying well in advance of any planned travel to avoid potential delays.

Expert Guidance on Passport Applications

Money Saving Expert, the renowned consumer advice website founded by Martin Lewis, has reiterated the importance of using the official government portal. "The only site you'll ever need to go to is the Gov.uk website," the site advises. It provides comprehensive options for first-time applications, renewals, and child passports.

The site further highlights that over seven million people in the UK saved money last year by choosing the online application method over the postal alternative available at Post Offices.

Additional Service Options

For frequent travellers, the Passport Office offers a 54-page 'jumbo' passport for an additional fee of £12 on top of the standard application cost. This option provides extra pages for visas and stamps.

Important Reminders for Passport Holders

The Passport Office also clarified the situation regarding the new blue UK passports. While newly-issued passports now feature a blue cover, existing burgundy passports remain fully valid until their expiry date. There is no requirement to replace a burgundy passport immediately; holders can continue to use it until it is due for renewal.

The transition to the blue design will occur naturally as part of the renewal or new application process.
