State Pensioners Urged to Claim Extra £110 Before 80th Birthday
State Pensioners Urged to Claim Extra £110 Before 80th Birthday

State pensioners born before 1946 could receive an additional £110 per week from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The over 80 pension is a State Pension specifically designed for individuals aged 80 or over.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, you must either receive a basic State Pension of less than £110.75 per week or have no basic State Pension at all. In the 2026 to 2027 tax year, the over 80 pension can provide up to £110.75 per week.

The amount you receive depends on how much basic State Pension you currently get from the DWP. If you do not receive the basic State Pension or get less than £110.75 per week, you could receive the difference to bring your total up to this amount.

Example Calculation

For instance, if you are 80 years old and receive £45 per week in basic State Pension, your pension could be topped up by £66.75, resulting in a total of £110.75 per week.

Claim Conditions

You can claim the over 80 pension if all of the following conditions apply:

  • You are 80 years old or over.
  • You do not receive the basic State Pension, or your basic State Pension is less than £110.75 per week in 2026 to 2027.
  • You have resided in the UK for at least 10 years out of a 20-year period (this does not have to be consecutive). This 20-year period must include the day before you turned 80 or any day after.
  • You were 'ordinarily resident' in the UK, the Isle of Man, or Gibraltar on your 80th birthday or on the date you made the claim for this pension, whichever is later.

If you live in or are moving to a European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland, you should find out about pensions and benefits for UK nationals in the EU, EEA, and Switzerland.

Important Notes

Your eligibility for the over 80 pension is not based on National Insurance contributions. The earliest you can claim is three months before your 80th birthday. Therefore, pensioners are urged to come forward promptly to ensure they receive the extra financial support they are entitled to.
