Planning Permission Granted for New Units at Coventry Airport Site
Warwick Council has officially granted planning permission for the construction of seven new manufacturing units on the grounds of Coventry Airport, despite facing several objections from the community. This decision comes as the airport is scheduled to close its doors permanently on June 11, 2026, following a formal notice issued by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
Details of the Approved Development
The council approved the planning application on Tuesday, allowing for the development of seven manufacturing units that will collectively span a total area of 4.8 square feet. Each unit will vary in size, ranging from 69,000 square feet to an impressive 1.5 million square feet, marking a significant transformation for the site.
In addition to the manufacturing units, Warwick Council has also given the green light for a state-of-the-art battery manufacturing facility at the location, which will be known as GreenPower Park. This joint venture between Coventry City Council and the Rigby Group aims to establish a centre of excellence focused on battery technology, advanced manufacturing, and clean energy initiatives.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The GreenPower Park project holds substantial promise for the local economy, with reports indicating the potential to create up to 6,000 new jobs in the region. This development aligns with broader efforts to boost economic growth and innovation in the West Midlands.
Last year, the West Midlands Combined Authority demonstrated its support for the initiative by committing £23 million in funding towards the GreenPower Park site, underscoring the strategic importance of this project for the area's future.
Historical Context and Closure Details
Coventry Airport, which was originally founded in 1936, has a rich history of serving various aviation needs, including freight operations, small aircraft services, and occasional commercial flights. However, the CAA confirmed the airport's impending closure, with businesses being instructed to vacate the premises by May of this year in preparation for the shutdown.
A statement from the CAA previously read: Coventry Aerodrome has given formal notice to us of its plan to close the airport permanently with effect from 11 June 2026. This closure paves the way for the site's redevelopment into a hub for manufacturing and clean energy technologies.
The planning approval represents a pivotal step in repurposing the airport land, transitioning it from an aviation hub to a modern industrial and technological park. This move is expected to drive innovation, support local employment, and contribute to the region's economic resilience in the years to come.
