New Veterinary Hospital Approved for Former Land Rover Dealership Site in Wolverhampton
Veterinary Hospital to Replace Old Land Rover Dealership in Wolverhampton

Plans to transform a long-vacant former Land Rover dealership in Wolverhampton into a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital have received official approval from the City of Wolverhampton Council.

Council Backs Redevelopment of Empty Site

The council has given the green light to developer Wolverhampton Estates to demolish the former car showroom at the corner of Stafford Street and Bone Mill Lane, which has been empty since its closure in 2012 with the loss of 45 jobs. The approval follows initial backing for demolition granted in September last year.

New Purpose-Built Veterinary Facility

The proposed two-storey purpose-built hospital will provide approximately 10,000 square feet of space dedicated to round-the-clock care for sick animals. The facility will include clinical, diagnostic, and treatment areas, along with office accommodation for administration, finance, and medical staff, as well as spaces for research and development.

Council planners stated: "There will not be an impact on the character of the area or highway safety that would have justified a reason for refusing the application. The proposal is therefore in accordance with the development plan."

Site History and Context

The former Land Rover showroom closed over a decade ago and has remained vacant since. A new £14 million dealership later opened off Penn Road in Wolverhampton city centre. The application highlights that the site is in a predominantly commercial and mixed-use area and aims to bring forward a purpose-built veterinary facility on land with established commercial use.

A statement included with the application noted: "The demolition of the existing building has already been confirmed by the council as not requiring prior approval, and this application is solely concerned with the proposed replacement development."

Recent Developments in the Area

In related news, plans for a new showroom and workshop on the opposite side of Bone Mill Road next to Brindley Mazda were approved by the City of Wolverhampton Council in October last year, indicating ongoing redevelopment activity in the vicinity.

This approval marks a significant step in repurposing an underutilized site to meet community needs for advanced animal healthcare services, while adhering to local development guidelines and planning policies.
