A Birmingham Labour councillor has called on Keir Starmer to step aside 'for the good of the country', as pressure mounts on the Prime Minister following disappointing local election results.
Councillor Majid Mahmood, representing Bromford & Hodge Hill, released a video late on May 11 stating that a fresh start 'could rebuild trust' in the Labour Party.
Hours after Starmer vowed to continue as Prime Minister, Cllr Mahmood said 'we need new leadership' that is more compassionate and in touch with the people.
He said: 'The level of hostility towards Labour right now is honestly unbelievable. For the good of the country, Keir Starmer needs to step aside. We need new leadership that is more compassionate, more genuine and more in touch with the people. A fresh start at the top could rebuild trust and bring our great city and country together again.'
Starmer's position came under scrutiny after Labour performed poorly in local elections, with Reform making significant gains. Paulette Hamilton, another Birmingham MP, has backed a change, saying 'voters have stopped listening'.
In the wider Midlands, North Warwickshire and Bedworth MP Rachel Taylor also called for a new leader, stating: 'It is with a genuinely heavy heart I am calling on Keir Starmer to announce a timetable for his departure. We must now find a new leader who can rebuild trust in our politics, unite the country, and confidently address the real challenges ordinary people are facing every day, as we promised.'
