Campaign for Mandatory Lifetime Bans
Tracy Venison, from Thakeham in West Sussex, has urged the Labour Party government to introduce automatic permanent driving bans for anyone who causes a death while under the influence of alcohol. Her call comes after her 19-year-old son Aidan was killed by a drunk driver in June 2024.
The Fatal Crash
Aidan Venison was riding his motorcycle near Wisborough Green, West Sussex, on 30 June 2024 when 28-year-old Toby Spiring ploughed into him. Police confirmed Spiring was more than twice the legal alcohol limit and had been drinking at a pub before attempting to overtake another vehicle. Spiring pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to eight years in prison at Lewes Crown Court.
Current Sentencing Under Fire
Despite the severity of the offence, Spiring received only a five-year driving ban. After this period, he will be eligible to take an extended test and regain his licence if he passes. Venison expressed shock at the decision: "I was astonished. This should be a total driving ban. They should not be allowed to go out and repeat the same thing again and take another person's life. When do we actually stand up and say, 'Enough is enough'?"
MP Backs Tougher Measures
Andrew Griffith, Venison's MP, supported her stance, stating: "It is a premeditated state of mind to get behind the wheel knowing that you are high on drugs or intoxicated through alcohol. This isn't someone, a driver, who has had a tragic momentary lapse of concentration."
Government Response
A Department for Transport spokesperson said: "Driving under the influence is reckless, dangerous and ruins lives. Courts already have the power to impose lifetime driving bans, and our first road safety strategy in over a decade will further strengthen enforcement and safety."
Victim Impact
The incident occurred just two days before Aidan's 20th birthday. Addressing Spiring directly in court, Venison said: "You stole his future, and in turn you have destroyed mine. You have taken away my opportunity as a mum to watch my son grow and fulfil his potential, and to share in life's simple moments. You have shattered our world."
