UK Government Urges British Nationals in Middle East to Register Presence Amid Tensions

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a critical advisory for British nationals currently in the Middle East, urging them to register their presence with the UK government. This move comes as escalating regional tensions cause significant disruption for travellers, particularly those seeking to return home to the United Kingdom.

Countries Affected by the Advisory

The registration service is specifically targeted at British passport holders in five key nations: Bahrain, Israel, Palestine, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The FCDO emphasizes that this step is essential to ensure individuals receive direct and timely updates on the evolving situation in the region.

Hamish Falconer MP, the Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, stated, "Escalating tension in the Middle East is causing disruption for many British travellers, especially those wanting to return home to the UK." He highlighted the importance of the new Register Your Presence initiative, which is being launched across numerous countries in the region to facilitate better communication.

How to Register and What Information Is Required

To complete the registration process, British nationals will need to provide:

  • A valid British passport number
  • An active email address
  • A mobile phone number

This information allows the FCDO to share important travel advice and safety updates directly with those affected. The service is accessible to all individuals holding a British passport, regardless of their current travel status.

Current Travel Advice and Safety Measures

In addition to registering, the FCDO and Minister Falconer have issued specific guidance for travellers in the region:

  1. Monitor Travel Advice: Continuously check the FCDO's travel advice for the country you are in.
  2. Contact Airlines First: If unable to return to the UK, contact your airline or travel company immediately.
  3. Shelter in Place: For those transiting through Dubai and Doha airports, remain indoors in a secure location and follow local authority instructions.
  4. Avoid Non-Essential Travel: Limit movement where possible to ensure personal safety.

The FCDO's social media post reiterated, "You should continue to follow travel advice and the advice of the local authorities." Minister Falconer added, "I know this is a really distressing time. If you need urgent consular assistance, Foreign Office teams are available 24/7 to support you."

This proactive measure aims to enhance the safety and communication for British nationals during a period of heightened uncertainty in the Middle East, ensuring they have access to critical information and support from UK authorities.
