Man Released in Widdecombe Murder Probe

Detectives investigating the murder of former Conservative MP and Reform UK spokeswoman Ann Widdecombe have released the 26-year-old man arrested on suspicion of her murder. Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed on Saturday (July 11) that the man had been released from custody and is no longer a suspect in the case.

Police Appeal for Information

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said: "Our priority remains identifying those responsible and ensuring that all available evidence is thoroughly examined." He added that the investigation is "moving at a significant pace" and urged anyone with information to come forward.

Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home in Haytor, Dartmoor, on Thursday, July 9, with serious injuries. The exact nature of her injuries has not been disclosed.

Political Reactions

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage described the murder as a "terrible reflection on modern Britain," warning that public figures face increased danger. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called for unity across political divides, speaking with his likely successor Andy Burnham, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch, and Farage.

Badenoch said she "really struggled to find the words" and called the attack "nasty, horrific."

Widdecombe served as a Conservative MP for Maidstone and the Weald from 1987 to 2010, holding ministerial roles under Sir John Major. She later became a Brexit Party MEP and Reform UK spokeswoman. She also appeared on Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother.
