Free TV Licence Eligibility for Older Pensioners
Ms Nandy previously argued the BBC licence fee was outdated, and one rule grants households £0 licences instead of the standard £180 fee most households pay. State pensioners aged 75 or older can get a free TV licence if they or their partner living at the same address receive Pension Credit. Applications can be started when the applicant turns 74 if they already receive Pension Credit.
It is important to note that a valid TV licence is required for watching or recording TV programmes as they are broadcast on any channel, downloading or watching programmes on BBC iPlayer, or watching or streaming live programmes on an online TV service such as Channel 4 or ITVX. This requirement also applies to devices without a television, including computers, laptops, tablets, digital boxes, games consoles, and DVD recorders.
Application Process and Key Advice
According to Independent Age, applicants must ensure the name used to apply for the free TV licence matches the name held by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). If the licence at the address is currently in someone else's name, the current licence number will be needed when applying for the free licence. A free TV licence covers the holder and anyone else living at the same address, regardless of age. If no one in the household receives Pension Credit, the standard licence fee must be paid.
