The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued urgent travel warnings for Bahrain and Kuwait, advising British nationals against all but essential travel to both countries. The updated guidance, released this morning, cites the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran as the primary reason, warning that the region remains unpredictable.
New Travel Advice for British Nationals
According to the Mirror, the FCDO has urged UK nationals currently in the Middle East to prepare for potential flight cancellations, travel disruption, and frequent airspace closures due to the unforeseen escalation between Washington and Tehran. The advisory comes amid heightened tensions that have seen Iran launch strikes and retaliatory attacks across the region since 8 July.
A statement from the FCDO read: "The US and Iran announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on 17 June in relation to the conflict in the Middle East, however the situation in the Middle East remains unpredictable. Since 8 July there have been strikes and retaliatory attacks by Iran in a number of locations across the region, including Bahrain, against US military and civilian infrastructure. There is a risk of more attacks and unforeseen escalation in the region."
Specific Threats to Bahrain and Kuwait
Bahrain has been repeatedly targeted by Iranian missile strikes due to the presence of American military bases on its soil. On 20 July, the US Embassy in Manama issued an advisory warning that Iran may seek to target unspecified locations in central Manama. The FCDO noted: "Before the ceasefire, the Iranian regime had stated its intention to target locations associated with the US and Israel, including organisations, businesses, facilities, and institutions."
Residents in Kuwait have received comparable guidance. Kuwait's airport has come under drone attack on numerous occasions since the conflict broke out, adding to the risks for travellers. Both countries have found themselves caught up in the heightening tensions between the US and Iran over recent months.

British nationals currently in Bahrain or Kuwait are advised to remain vigilant, monitor local media, and follow instructions from local authorities. The FCDO warns that commercial travel options may be limited and that individuals should consider their personal security and ability to leave the country if necessary.
