Cyclist Johnny Turner has embarked on a deeply personal 900-mile odyssey across Ireland, retracing a historic tour completed by his father, Jackie (John), and family friend Gerry in 1961. Johnny is taking on this monumental challenge as part of the official Cycle 300 Miles in June campaign for Prostate Cancer Research, spurred by the loss of his father to the disease and his uncle Davie's current ongoing treatment.
A Journey of History and Heritage
The journey is more than just a physical test; it is a search for history. Johnny is navigating the Irish landscape with his father's original YHA (Youth Hostel Association) stamp book in hand, attempting to locate and visit the very buildings that sheltered the teenage duo 65 years ago. From the Poison Glen House to the Bridge of Boyne, Johnny is documenting the evolution of these sites, some now decaying ruins and others transformed into family homes.
Overcoming Hurdles
The 900-mile route represents triple the distance of the standard June challenge, but the hurdles have been significant. Johnny has faced punishing headwinds, relentless Irish rain, and significant mechanical failures, including a collapsed pannier rack in Dublin. Despite these hurdles, he has found warmth in every village, meeting locals who remember the old hostels and strangers who have offered help.
Spreading a Message of Kindness
Throughout the ride, Johnny is championing a simple but powerful message: #DoSomethingKind. He is asking supporters not just for donations, but to commit an act of kindness. As a lead participant in the 'Cycle 300 Miles in June' campaign, Johnny is aiming to smash his targets and raise thousands for life-saving research.
Personal Connection
Johnny said: "I never really knew why I wanted to do this, but it is giving me such a unique connection to my dad. To see these places in colour that he only saw as a teenager, and to share those memories back with Gerry, who is now in his 80s, is incredibly special. Sadly, dad lost his battle with prostate cancer, and with my uncle Davie currently undergoing treatment, the motivation to support research is stronger than ever. Taking part in the Cycle 300 Miles initiative this June was the perfect way to honour them both."
Call to Action
"Opportunities to help come along all the time," Johnny explains. "If you see someone who needs a hand, do it, and tell them to simply pass it on." To donate and support, visit the JustGiving page. Follow the journey and view the historical photos on Facebook.
