Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal have reportedly identified Ollie Watkins as a possible replacement for Karim Benzema. The Aston Villa striker has two years remaining on his contract with Villa, but is just nine goals away from breaking into the Premier League 100 Club.
Despite a difficult first half to last season, Watkins still ended the campaign with 21 goals across all competitions, including 16 in the league. His turnaround in form came after Thomas Tuchel left him out of the penultimate England squad before the World Cup, before his return to form forced the Three Lions boss to bring him back into the fold.
Al-Hilal's interest in Watkins
Now, according to a report from Sacha Tavolieri, among other reporters, Al-Hilal could make their move for Watkins with just two weeks of the transfer window remaining. The Saudi club are looking to bolster their attacking options, and the 28-year-old England international has emerged as a prime target.
Watkins has been a key player for Aston Villa since his move from Brentford in 2020, scoring consistently in the Premier League. His pace, movement, and finishing ability have made him one of the most sought-after strikers in the league.
Villa's squad concerns
After already losing Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne, Villa would be hard-pressed to part with any more of their stars. That is especially the case with Emi Martinez expected to leave in the final fortnight of the window, despite a move to Juventus falling through.
Villa will follow through with the signing of new No. 1 goalkeeper Zion Suzuki in a £30 million deal from Parma. This move indicates that the club is preparing for life without their Argentine goalkeeper, but losing Watkins would be a significant blow to their attacking prowess.
Upcoming season and Watkins' importance
Unai Emery’s side start their new league campaign against Brighton on the south coast on Sunday. Watkins is expected to lead the line, and his goals will be crucial if Villa are to improve on their fourth-place finish last season.
With the transfer window closing soon, the coming days will be critical in determining whether Watkins remains at Villa Park or makes a move to the Middle East. The club's fans will be hoping that their star striker stays, but the allure of the Saudi Pro League could prove tempting.
