Aston Villa's January Transfer Plans: Striker Priority, Sancho Stays & £100m Reality
Aston Villa's January transfer window strategy revealed

Aston Villa are preparing to enter the January transfer window with a clear plan to strengthen Unai Emery's squad as they mount an unexpected challenge at the Premier League's summit.

Villa's Remarkable Form and Transfer Context

The winter window opens in just nine days, offering Villa a chance to bolster a squad enjoying a sensational run of form. After a slow start to the campaign, Villa have won 16 of their last 18 matches across all competitions. This surge has left them sitting third in the Premier League and in a strong position in the Europa League at Christmas.

Last January, the club was active, bringing in five players. However, the context is markedly different now. A year ago, Villa raised around £100 million by selling fringe players like Jhon Durán and Jaden Philogene. This time, generating significant funds without selling key members of the starting eleven would be a major challenge, limiting their financial flexibility.

Where Villa Must Strengthen in January

Emery's primary focus is expected to be on recruiting a new striker. This is not to replace the talismanic Ollie Watkins, but to provide crucial support and manage his workload. Watkins has been managing a minor knee issue and, aside from a brace against Brighton, has not been at his prolific best this season.

A natural number nine, tailored to Emery's system, is considered a key target. Such a signing would be vital for the Europa League push and for balancing multiple competitions later in the season. The potential departure of Harvey Elliott, whose loan from Liverpool has been disappointing, could free up the No.9 shirt and squad space.

In contrast to Elliott's situation, Emery has indicated that winger Jadon Sancho will remain at Villa Park beyond January. The manager has expressed confidence that the former England international can rediscover his best form in the second half of the season.

Squad Depth and Emery's Verdict

Elsewhere, Villa's squad appears relatively well-stocked. Midfield and wide areas have strong depth, especially if Brazilian youngster Alysson arrives from Grêmio as anticipated. Defensive options are also manageable, with Victor Lindelöf providing cover at centre-back.

One area for potential reinforcement is right-back, where Andres Garcia has yet to feature this season despite being fit since late November. Matty Cash remains the undisputed first choice in that position.

Speaking about the upcoming window, Unai Emery confirmed the club is working on potential opportunities. "Of course, the club is working, and we have always one eye in the transfer window," he said. "In case something can help us... we must do it."

The overarching message is clear: Villa do not require major surgery. Instead, expect a few targeted, strategic alterations as Emery looks to maintain his team's remarkable momentum in the second half of the season.
