Birmingham City's Chris Davies confirms Alex Cochrane injury blow
Birmingham City suffer Alex Cochrane injury blow

Birmingham City have been dealt a significant injury setback with defender Alex Cochrane ruled out of their Championship clash with Sheffield United and facing a race to be fit for the festive period.

Last-Minute Training Ground Blow

Manager Chris Davies confirmed the left-back was injured in the final training session ahead of Saturday's match at Bramall Lane, which Blues lost 3-0. Cochrane was a late withdrawal from the team sheet, forcing Jack Robinson to fill in out of position for the second time in three games.

"Alex was a blow because Alex was (injured) at the end of training yesterday," Davies explained. "We were all prepared and he was obviously ready to go and in the team and it was a last-minute issue that cropped up. So, that was a bit of a blow, as you can imagine."

Uncertain Timeline for Key Defender

The manager offered a vague prognosis on the defender's return, admitting the medical team are still assessing the severity. The timing is particularly problematic as Cochrane has been the club's only specialist left-back for the past 18 months, making his absences acutely felt.

"And Alex, whether it's days or weeks, I'm not exactly sure yet," Davies said. "We'll have to wait and see how he is in the next couple of days. Hopefully, he can be back because, obviously, as a pure left-back, he's the only one we've got in that squad. So, it'll be important for him to get back ASAP."

Christmas Fixtures in Jeopardy

This fresh injury concern places Cochrane's participation in Birmingham City's upcoming Christmas schedule in serious doubt. The Blues are set to face Derby County and Southampton during the busy holiday period, and Davies will be desperate to have his first-choice defender available.

The recurring issue of cover in the left-back position is now a pressing tactical headache for the manager, who must find a solution if Cochrane's absence extends beyond a few days.
