Birmingham City are actively preparing for the January transfer window, with manager Chris Davies identifying key areas for reinforcement as his side aims to climb the Championship table.
Blues Outline January Transfer Strategy
Following a 1-1 home draw with Charlton Athletic last time out, where defender Christoph Klarer scored, attention at St Andrew's has turned to squad building. According to reports from Football Insider, the club is 'exploring' the market with a focus on recruiting a new striker, a midfielder, and a left-back.
The upcoming window presents a dual opportunity for the Blues: to bring in fresh talent and to potentially move players on to free up squad space and funds. Birmingham, promoted from League One earlier this year alongside Wrexham and Charlton, currently sit 13th in the Championship after 21 games, just five points adrift of the play-off places occupied by Ipswich Town and Hull City.
Davies Confirms Recruitment Drive
Manager Chris Davies has publicly acknowledged the work going on behind the scenes. "We’re looking at a few key positions going into January," Davies stated. "We want to come out of that window stronger. This new Birmingham, as such, has had a look at the Championship now and seen where we sit in relation to the other teams... there’s some key positions we need to look at and are looking at."
This follows a busy summer where the club secured permanent deals for Kyogo Furuhashi, Demarai Gray, and Bright Osayi-Samuel, and loan moves for Tommy Doyle, James Beadle, and Eiran Cashin.
Potential Targets for Key Positions
In their search for attacking reinforcements, Birmingham are believed to be considering options to compete with current forwards Kyogo, Marvin Ducksch, and Lyndon Dykes. Norwich City's Josh Sargent is viewed as a potential marquee signing, while Hearts' Lawrence Shankland and Southampton's Cameron Archer are also thought to be on the radar. Sheffield United's Tyrese Campbell is another name linked.
The midfield search is wide-ranging, with players like Sunderland's Dan Neil, Bristol City's Jason Knight, Bournemouth's Joe Rothwell, and Norwich's Kenny McLean all suggested as possible targets for the Blues.
At left-back, despite having Alex Cochrane and the injured Lee Buchanan, the club could seek further competition. Potential options identified include Ryan Giles, Josh Tymon, Manchester United's Harry Amass, Blackburn's Harry Pickering, and Plymouth's Bali Mumba.
Birmingham's next fixture is an away trip to face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane this weekend, as the build-up to the crucial January window intensifies.
