Wolverhampton Wanderers could be set to part ways with midfielder Fer Lopez just months after his arrival, with former club Celta Vigo preparing a bid to bring him back to Spain.
Celta Vigo's Swift Move for Lopez
According to reports from Spanish publication AS, Celta Vigo are poised to make their move for the 21-year-old in a 'matter of days'. The La Liga side sold Lopez to Wolves in the previous summer transfer window for a fee of £19 million, but are now eager to orchestrate a swift return for the player they developed.
Lopez was former Wolves head coach Vitor Pereira's first signing in June, penning a long-term contract that runs until June 2030. Despite the initial fanfare, his adaptation to English football has been challenging. The Spain youth international has made 11 appearances this campaign, providing one assist, but has found consistent starts hard to come under current manager Rob Edwards.
A Transfer That Hasn't Worked Out
The prospect of Lopez departing before the transfer deadline on Monday 2nd February is growing. Sources suggest a return to his homeland is increasingly likely as the player has struggled to settle into life in England and has failed to make the desired impact at Molineux.
For Wolves, currently entrenched in a Premier League relegation battle, allowing Lopez to leave could free up both squad space and significant funds. This would enable manager Rob Edwards to pursue other reinforcements that better suit his system and the club's immediate fight for survival. Edwards' side remain in the bottom three, 15 points from safety after 20 fixtures.
An Escape Route to Familiar Surroundings
For Lopez, a return to Celta Vigo represents a clear escape route. A product of their academy, he rose through various youth levels before making his first-team debut in October 2024, eventually becoming a key player. The pull of returning to a familiar environment and regular football in La Liga is strong.
The midfielder's comments upon signing for Wolves now seem poignant. In June, he said: "It's an amazing opportunity for my career to play in the Premier League... Vitor told me he thought I was a good fit in the squad." He also referenced conversations with former Celta teammate Jorgen Strand Larsen, who praised Wolves' fans and style of play.
However, with Pereira long gone and game time limited, the future of the Madrid-born player is now up in the air. All eyes will be on whether Celta Vigo formalise their interest with an official bid in the coming days, potentially ending Lopez's brief English chapter.
