Liverpool manager Arne Slot has publicly addressed the uncertain future of Harvey Elliott, confirming the Reds hold no power to recall the midfielder from his difficult loan spell at Aston Villa.
No Escape Clause for Struggling Star
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder joined Villa on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day in September 2025, in a deal that included an obligation for Villa to buy if he made ten appearances. However, his time in the Midlands has turned sour, with Elliott featuring in just five games and being omitted from matchday squads for several months.
When questioned about the player's situation, Slot was unequivocal, distancing Liverpool from any decision-making. "If you want to ask about a [Aston] Villa player, ask Unai Emery," Slot stated. "Liverpool has no recall option." This leaves Elliott in a state of limbo, unable to force a return to his parent club despite his lack of playing time.
Emery's Firm Stance on Permanent Deal
The core of the issue lies with Villa manager Unai Emery, who has made it clear he does not intend to activate the purchase clause. The Spaniard explained the club's position last week, citing financial reasons.
"The problem we have with Harvey is that this year he is on loan, and in case he plays matches we must buy him," Emery said. "We decided two months ago that we are not convinced to sign him, spending the money we would need to. He is training every day with very good behaviour... but this is not something good for him and good for us."

With the door closed at Villa Park and no route back to Anfield in the short term, Elliott's immediate career prospects are clouded. The player has been linked with a potential move to Major League Soccer side Charlotte, but reports suggest he is not keen on the switch to the United States.
