Emery's Villa Transfer Update: Admits Summer Mistakes

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has offered a detailed insight into the club's January transfer plans, while candidly reflecting on errors made during the previous summer window.

Villa's Winter Window Activity

The Spanish boss confirmed that the club's recruitment team is actively working to identify potential signings this month. Villa have already secured the arrival of Alysson from Brazilian side Gremio and are close to finalising a £10 million move for FC Metz's promising young striker, Brian Madjo.

In terms of departures, the club is also involved in discussions regarding the future of Harvey Elliott. Negotiations are ongoing over the possibility of the midfielder returning to his parent club, Liverpool, although a breakthrough has not yet been achieved.

Reflecting on a Turbulent Summer

Emery openly acknowledged that missteps in the summer transfer window contributed to a difficult start to the season. Villa failed to win any of their opening five Premier League fixtures, managing just a single goal during that poor run of form.

"I am happy with how we are doing the process this year, even with the difficulties and some mistakes we made in the summer," Emery stated. He praised the collective response, adding, "How we were in the summer, with the circumstances we had in that moment, and now how we are, overall – and the response of the players – I am so proud of it."

Remarkable Turnaround and Future Ambitions

Since a 1–1 draw with Sunderland, Villa's form has been nothing short of spectacular. They have won 18 of their last 22 matches, propelling them to third place in the Premier League and a strong position in the Europa League's league phase.

With momentum on their side, Emery emphasised the desire to strengthen. "The club is working on it. The people with this responsibility are trying to add information about possibilities," he said. "In case we can improve the squad, we will do it. In case someone is leaving as well, we are alert for it."

Looking ahead, the manager stressed the need for consistency. "Each match and competition is a new challenge, so we must be so demanding and consistent to get the next step forward with the same idea and style. Hopefully we can perform."
