Alan Hutton has delivered a blunt assessment of Jadon Sancho's future, suggesting the Manchester United winger may not remain in the Premier League as he faces a pivotal summer.
Sancho's Uncertain Future
Sancho, who spent the season on loan at Aston Villa, will return to Old Trafford this summer with his contract set to expire. Reports indicate United may trigger a 12-month extension to secure a transfer fee, but if not, he could leave for free. The 26-year-old has shown flashes of quality at Villa Park but failed to nail down a regular starting spot under Unai Emery, making only nine Premier League starts.
Former Aston Villa defender Hutton expressed his doubts about Sancho's ability to rediscover his best form in England. "It's a difficult situation for him, because I really like him as a player," Hutton told Goal. "I think when he was at Dortmund, he was absolutely exceptional. He showed what he's capable of — a player with excellent technique, loved to go one-on-one, create opportunities. We just didn't see that."
Confidence and Transfer Fee Woes
Hutton pointed to Sancho's big-money move to United in 2021 for £73 million as a potential factor in his struggles. "I don't know if it's because the big transfer to Manchester United didn't work out very well and his confidence is a little shaken. I saw at Villa this season, at times, what he's capable of, but perhaps just the transfer fee, the salary, that kind of structure can be discouraging for teams."
He added: "So, whether it's another loan to some European club, we'll wait and see. It's a shame he didn't reach that level."
Dortmund Return on the Cards?
German outlet Bild reported last week that Sancho is keen on a return to Borussia Dortmund, the club where he made his name. Dortmund's sporting director, Lars Ricken, is aware of the winger's wishes, though the Bundesliga side are reportedly unsure if Sancho can recapture the form that made him one of Europe's most sought-after wingers.
Sancho's stock has fallen significantly since his 2021 move to United, and a loan spell at Chelsea before Villa also failed to reignite his career. Despite hopes that a move to Villa would provide a platform for resurgence, he struggled for consistency.
As the summer transfer window approaches, Sancho's future remains one of the most intriguing storylines, with a potential free transfer or a return to Germany both possible outcomes.
