A definitive mathematical study has settled one of football's great debates, declaring Wayne Rooney's spectacular bicycle kick for Manchester United against rivals Manchester City in 2011 as the greatest goal in Premier League history.

Technical brilliance accounted for 35% of the total score, difficulty for 25%, context for 20%, impact on the result for 15%, and the moment the goal was scored for 5%. The calculation, Goal Score = (35 x T) + (25 x D) + (20 x C) + (15 x I) + (5 x M), allowed for a maximum of 1,000 points.
Rooney's acrobatic 78th-minute winner, connecting with a Nani cross to seal a 2-1 victory for United, scored a near-perfect 970 points. Bobby Seagull commented: "The maths confirms what our hearts already knew. When you combine outrageous technique, high stakes and perfect execution, you get goals that transcend sport and become art."

The study produced a definitive top ten list of Premier League goals based purely on the mathematical formula. In second place was Dennis Bergkamp's sublime pirouette and finish for Arsenal against Newcastle in March 2002, scoring 925 points. Third spot went to his former teammate, Thierry Henry, for his audacious flick-and-volley against Manchester United in 2000, rated at 905.

However, a separate survey of 2,000 football fans revealed a different favourite. The data from OnePoll.com also revealed that 79% of fans believe incredible goals help cement the Premier League's reputation as one of the world's best competitions. Furthermore, two-thirds admitted they are likely to search online to re-watch clips of spectacular strikes.

The fact there are differences between the maths and supporters' views shows these moments are subjective and carry emotional weight. One thing that's clear from both sets of research is the league has produced some amazing goals over the years."
