Chelsea's Squad Depth Tested Ahead of Villa Fixture
Chelsea could be missing up to six players for their Premier League encounter against Aston Villa on Wednesday evening, dealing a significant blow to manager Liam Rosenior's plans. The latest setback involves winger Pedro Neto, who received a suspension after accumulating two yellow cards during Chelsea's 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Suspensions and Injury Concerns Mount
Neto's absence adds to Chelsea's growing list of unavailable players. Defender Wesley Fofana, however, will return to action against Villa after serving a one-match ban following his red card in the previous fixture against Burnley. This provides some relief for Rosenior, but other key figures remain sidelined.
Left-back Marc Cucurella continues to be absent due to a hamstring injury sustained just before half-time in the Leeds United match. Rosenior expressed uncertainty about his return timeline, stating, "I can't give an exact timeframe on Marc. He suffered a hamstring injury just before half-time in the Leeds game. It's a real shame because he's an outstanding player, and one of the best left-backs in the world."
The manager highlighted available cover options, noting, "It’s a shame not to have Marc available but we have Jorrel [Hato] and we have Malo [Gusto] who can play on that side, so we have really good players that can cover. Of course, the sooner Marc gets back, the better."
Additional Fitness Setbacks for Chelsea
Further injury concerns involve Brazilian winger Estevao, who missed the 1-1 draw with Burnley as a precaution after experiencing hamstring discomfort during training. His availability for the Villa match remains doubtful. Another winger, Jamie Gittens, has been absent for the last six matches across all competitions due to his own hamstring injury.
Long-term absentee Levi Colwill remains unavailable after suffering an ACL injury during the summer, while Dario Essugo has also been missing in recent weeks. These absences collectively pose a substantial challenge for Chelsea as they prepare to face a competitive Aston Villa side.
The situation underscores the physical demands of the Premier League season and tests Chelsea's squad depth at a critical juncture. Rosenior will need to carefully manage his available resources to field a competitive team against Villa, who will be looking to capitalize on any weaknesses in the Chelsea lineup.
