Doddie Triple Crown Cyclists Conquer Epic 750-Mile Journey for MND Charity

The streets of Dublin erupted in celebration last week as the Doddie Triple Crown cycling team crossed the finish line of their monumental 750-mile ride. Klaxons blared, cheers echoed, and a vibrant display of banners created an electric atmosphere, marking the triumphant conclusion of this charity event on March 13.

A Mammoth Effort for a Vital Cause

Led by 12 core teammates, hundreds of participants, including Kathy Weir, 55, wife of the late rugby legend Doddie Weir OBE, dismounted their bicycles after four grueling days. Covering an astonishing 180 to 220 miles daily, the cyclists traversed Scotland, England, Wales, and Ireland—the nations that compete in the Six Nations Triple Crown. Their efforts were dedicated to raising funds for My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, established by Doddie following his motor neuron disease diagnosis, which tragically claimed his life in 2022. The foundation is committed to finding a cure for this devastating, life-limiting condition. At the time of reporting, the incredible ride had raised an impressive £1.17 million.

Community Support and Emotional Moments

Dublin locals, loved ones, supporters, and media thronged the capital’s streets on March 13, the eve of Scotland’s rugby clash with Ireland at the national stadium. Celtic nations set aside rivalries to unite in cheering the cyclists, who completed an arduous final leg. The journey began in Melrose, heading to Leeds on day one, then to Gloucester, where former England captain Lewis Moody—who revealed his own MND diagnosis in September 2025—and former Gloucester and Scotland lock Ed Slater joined foundation patron Jill Douglas to offer support.

An Irish Ferries crossing to Rosslare brought the teams to Ireland for the final push, despite challenges like a cancelled ferry, relentless cold weather, and harsh conditions that kept the schedule uncertain. Kathy Weir shared her reflections, stating, "This ride has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. The people involved have been phenomenal, and the support from communities has kept us going through tougher moments. Doddie would be so proud of everyone who continues to get behind the cause."

Celebrity Participation and Inspiring Words

Notable figures joined the finish line in Dublin, including record-breaking cyclist Mark Beaumont and Irish rugby hero Gordon D’Arcy, who called participation a "huge honour." Rob Wainwright, Doddie’s former teammate and ex-Scotland captain, expressed deep emotion, saying, "There were times over the past 750 miles when it really hurt, but compared to Doddie’s battle, it puts everything into perspective. This challenge was about carrying his spirit forward and raising vital funds. We’re not stopping until there’s a cure for MND."

Foundation’s Impact and Future Goals

My Name’5 Doddie Foundation has now committed over £20 million to research for effective treatments and a cure for MND. Paul Thompson, director of fundraising, praised the effort, noting, "Rob’s determination and Kathy’s commitment to continuing Doddie’s legacy are inspiring. Every mile ridden and pound raised helps fund vital research toward a world free of MND." Last year’s event, Doddie’s Grand Tour 2025, raised more than £1 million, highlighting ongoing community dedication.

Motor neuron disease is a progressive neurological condition affecting motor neurons, leading to muscle weakness. In the UK, six people die from MND daily, with no cure and limited treatment options currently available. The Doddie Triple Crown ride stands as a powerful testament to resilience and hope in the fight against this cruel disease.
