Ex-West Brom Defender Darren Moore a Top Contender for Managerial Role

West Bromwich Albion are facing a crucial decision regarding their managerial position, with former player and manager Darren Moore emerging as one of the leading candidates, according to reports from Football Insider. The 51-year-old is reportedly open to a return to The Hawthorns in some capacity, as the club navigates a challenging season in the Championship.

Current Situation and League Standing

Currently, James Morrison is serving as caretaker manager for the Baggies, who are fighting to avoid relegation. West Brom sit in 21st place in the Championship table, just one point above the drop zone. They are positioned above Leicester City, Oxford United, and Sheffield Wednesday, who occupy the bottom three spots. This precarious situation underscores the urgency for a permanent managerial appointment to steer the team away from danger.

Darren Moore's Background and Availability

Darren Moore is viewed as a potential figure who could assist Morrison or take on a managerial role directly. His deep familiarity with the club, having spent five years as a player with West Brom, where he made 116 appearances across all competitions as a defender, makes him an attractive option. After his playing career, which included spells at Portsmouth, Derby County, and Barnsley, Moore transitioned into management.

He previously managed West Brom from 2018 to 2019, achieving a win rate of 48% during his tenure. Since then, he has held positions at Doncaster Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday, and Huddersfield Town. Most recently, he guided Port Vale to promotion from League Two last year but was dismissed in December following a poor run of form. Currently without a club, Moore is available and ready to work immediately, adding to his appeal as a candidate.

Recent Match and Caretaker's Comments

In their latest outing, West Brom suffered a 2-1 defeat to Oxford United. Reflecting on the loss, caretaker manager James Morrison expressed disappointment, stating, "I thought we started well in the first 15 minutes, but then I'm really disappointed with the manner of the goals that followed. We said in the week what their game plan would be and we just let it happen. It's not acceptable. It's been a problem all season and we've got to, somehow, quickly get rid of that problem."

Morrison further highlighted frustrations with the team's performance, adding, "It's really frustrating and disappointing that around their box we weren't brave enough, didn't create enough and didn't take the game by the scruff of the neck." These comments underscore the ongoing challenges West Brom face as they seek stability and improvement under new leadership.
