The coaching vacancy opened up when Mark Kennedy left his role as the Under-21s Professional Phase Coach in mid-February, citing personal reasons. Kennedy had only returned to the club eight months prior. Birmingham City confirmed in a statement that the process of identifying a successor is now underway, with Purse potentially stepping into the role.
Darren Purse's Storied History with Birmingham City
Darren Purse enjoyed a significant six-year spell with Birmingham City from 1998 to 2004, making 200 appearances for the club. Signed by Trevor Francis, he was part of Steve Bruce's squad during the early Premiership years. Purse played 40 games in the memorable 2001/02 promotion season, including the play-off semi-final against Millwall, before moving on to West Brom and later Cardiff City.
Current Coaching Experience with Cardiff City
Since December 2021, Purse has served as Cardiff City's Under-21s and loans manager. In this role, he has played a crucial part in developing young talents such as Ruben Colwill, Joel Colwill, Dylan Lawlor, Isaak Davies, and Ronan Kpakio, all of whom have represented Wales and the Bluebirds at senior levels.
