Chris Davies Faces Crucial Decisions After Birmingham City's Derby Disaster
Birmingham City are set to host Blackburn Rovers in their next Championship fixture on Good Friday, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm. This match comes on the heels of a disheartening 1-0 defeat to Derby County, a result that has effectively dashed Blues' hopes of securing a play-off spot this season.
As reported by Alex Dicken, Birmingham City's struggles were epitomized by an experimental back-three formation featuring Ibrahim Osman at wing-back, a tactic that failed miserably at Derby. With promotion ambitions now out of reach, manager Chris Davies and his squad are playing for pride and potentially their futures at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park.
Five Essential Adjustments for the Blackburn Encounter
Blackburn Rovers, currently embroiled in a relegation battle, have shown resilience with a surprise win at Millwall and a draw against Middlesbrough before the international break. To counter this and appease the home crowd expecting entertainment, Davies must consider several lineup changes.
First, in goal, Ryan Allsop should be given the nod. With the season effectively over, continuing to develop loanee James Beadle at the expense of Allsop makes little sense, especially after Beadle's costly error against Derby.
Second, Ethan Laird must return to his natural right-back position. Due to ongoing issues at left-back, Laird might need to shift across, as neither Jack Robinson nor Jonathan Panzo have proven efficient in that role.
Third, Christoph Klarer should move to the left side of defense. While not ideal, as Klarer excels on the right, results have been significantly better with Phil Neumann in the lineup, warranting his reinstatement.
Fourth, the midfield pairing of Paik Seung-ho and Jhon Solis should be prioritized. Tomoki Iwata has underperformed this season, and Tommy Doyle is set to return to Wolves, making this duo the best available option.
Fifth, young talents Carlos Vicente and August Priske deserve more playing time. Priske, in particular, has yet to start a home Championship game and comes off a confident performance, scoring for Denmark under-21s in a 4-0 win over Wales.
Looking Ahead to Birmingham's Future
Priske and Jay Stansfield, both contracted until 2031, represent the club's future and should be fielded together frequently in the remaining seven games. Additionally, Ibrahim Osman should start on the left wing, as his current form merits selection over Demarai Gray.
Suggested lineup for the Blackburn match (4-2-3-1): Allsop; Iwata, Neumann, Klarer, Laird; Solis, Paik; Vicente, Stansfield, Osman; Priske.
As Birmingham City aim to finish the season on a high, these changes could provide the spark needed to entertain fans and build for the future. What are your thoughts on this proposed lineup? Share your opinions in the comments below.
