Unai Emery Vows Revenge to End Aston Villa's Trophy Drought
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is fiercely determined to avenge the club's recent semi-final heartbreaks and finally end a painful 30-year trophy drought this season. With Newcastle United visiting Villa Park for the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday, Emery's side aims to progress beyond this stage in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2008–2011.
Recent Setbacks Fuel Motivation
Villa have faced crushing disappointments in recent cup competitions, losing convincingly to Crystal Palace in last year's FA Cup semi-final and suffering a two-legged defeat to Olympiacos in the Conference League semi-final the previous season, despite being favorites. These setbacks have only strengthened Emery's resolve to secure silverware.
"I set the target myself when I arrived here - to try to win trophies," Emery stated. "Of course, this is very difficult. We played in the semi-final last year of the FA Cup. It was a very good moment to share with our supporters, but we lost. We were excited, yet frustrated."
Multiple Competitions in Focus
While Villa are excelling in the Premier League, currently sitting third, Champions League qualification remains a challenge. Emery emphasizes that winning trophies is a key objective, with the Europa League and FA Cup offering crucial opportunities.
"In the Europa League, we are still contenders. In the FA Cup, we played fantastically at Spurs - the players showed a real wish to do something," he added. "We have a difficult team in front of us, the draw was not easy. We must accept it, but we are motivated."
Emery's Trophy Pedigree and Villa's Progress
Emery, who has won 11 trophies in his career including four Europa League titles, is yet to lift silverware in England. However, Villa have reached four cup finals since their last trophy in 1996, and under his leadership, the squad appears closer than ever to breaking the drought.
"I am feeling something like motivation, like excitement at our expectation to get better and compete for it," Emery explained. "To get a trophy is something fantastic, but to achieve it is very difficult. Here in England, every domestic competition is so, so difficult."
Upcoming Challenge Against Newcastle
The FA Cup clash against Newcastle United represents a significant test. Emery acknowledged their strength, noting, "They are doing very well in the Champions League. Sometimes they are up and down, but when they are up, they are so, so strong."
With Villa's supporters behind them at Villa Park, Emery is confident his team can showcase their improvement and competitive spirit. "We must show our wishes, our preparation, and our improvement because how we play tomorrow is going to be the key," he concluded.
