Racing Fans Opt for Benidorm Over Cheltenham to Beat High Costs
Horse racing enthusiasts are increasingly choosing to travel to Benidorm to watch the Cheltenham Festival, as many punters avoid the event in Gloucestershire due to its steep pricing. Social media platforms have been flooded with stories of fans heading to the iconic Spanish resort to enjoy the racing action from afar.
It has been estimated that spectators can save thousands of pounds by watching the festival from Benidorm instead of purchasing tickets and accommodation at Cheltenham itself. For instance, a pint of beer at the racecourse costs around £8, while in Benidorm, it is only £2. Similarly, meals in Spain can be as cheap as £6, compared to a burger alone costing up to £12 at the event.
Free Trip Competition Adds to the Appeal
Now, a sports betting website is enhancing this trend by offering four lucky individuals an all-expenses paid trip to Benidorm during the festival. The competition, which closes on March 4, includes flights, accommodation, and VIP treatment from March 10 to 15. Social media sensation Stephen 'Racing Blogger' Power will also join the winners.
This initiative follows a successful campaign last year by Freebets.com, which went viral after fans realized it was cheaper to watch the racing from Spain than attend in person. Dominic Celica of Freebets.com commented, "Our competition was such a success last year, we had to give fans the chance to go again. Cheltenham in the changeable British weather is always brilliant, but who would want to miss out on a chance of some serious sunshine?"
Festival Highlights and Industry Response
The Cheltenham Festival, spanning four days including Champion Day, Ladies Day, St Patrick’s Thursday, and Gold Cup Day, will feature top contenders like Inothewayurthinkin and previous winner Galopin des Champs for the prestigious Gold Cup. While thousands will gather in Gloucestershire to hear the thundering hooves, four winners will be soaking up the sun in Spain.
Guy Lavender, CEO of Cheltenham Racecourse, expressed pride in the event's global appeal, stating, "The Cheltenham Festival is a world class sporting event at an iconic venue that takes place once a year. It is wonderful to see so many people wanting to engage with and celebrate the event." He emphasized that whether fans watch from home, Benidorm, or on-site, the goal is to make everyone feel part of the experience.
This shift highlights broader trends in sports viewing and travel, as fans seek more affordable ways to enjoy major events without compromising on the excitement.
