Greg James: Lickey Hills 'Nearly Did Me In' on Comic Relief Ride

Radio 1 DJ Greg James Pushed to Limit by Lickey Hills During Epic Comic Relief Cycle

BBC Radio 1 presenter Greg James has revealed that the notorious Lickey Hills near Birmingham "nearly did me in" as he continues his gruelling 1,000km tandem cycle across the UK for Comic Relief. The popular DJ is undertaking the monumental charity challenge, which began in Weymouth on March 13 and is scheduled to conclude in Edinburgh on Friday, March 20 – coinciding with Red Nose Day.

Exhaustion Sets In After Brutal Birmingham Leg

On Monday, March 16, Greg James embarked on the fourth day of his journey, cycling more than 91 miles from Birmingham to Worksop. This followed an extremely demanding 137km ride from Abergavenny to the Midlands on Sunday, March 15, which left him feeling "completely spent" after confronting the challenging terrain of the Lickey Hills area.

In a candid update posted to the BBC live blog at the end of day three, Greg described his physical and mental state in vivid detail. "I was feeling alright about two hours ago..." he wrote, before explaining the ordeal. "There was just this mad hill, in a place called Lickey End, which I've always found funny and never known where it was. And then after Lickey End comes Lickey Hill, and Lickey Hill nearly did me in – and that can't be on the headstone!"

"I Feel a Bit Shaky and Depleted" – Greg's Honest Account

The broadcaster openly shared the toll the challenge is taking on his body, noting symptoms of extreme fatigue. "I don't know whether I'm hot or cold, I keep shivering then sweating, and then I'm wet because of the rain," he admitted. "I'm not unhappy with the progress, I just personally am absolutely dead today. I feel a bit shaky and depleted."

Greg also touched on the psychological aspect of such an endurance feat, stating: "I'm definitely focused on it, you get into this weird headspace where this is just my life now. My brain is saying, 'Wow, I can't believe I've done all that!', but my body is saying, 'Can you stop now?'"
