A pub in Kings Heath has been recognised as one of the finest places in the country to watch live sport. The Kings Arms, located on Alcester Road South, has earned a spot on the shortlist for the Best Pub To Watch Sport category at the prestigious Great British Pub Awards 2026.
Only Birmingham Pub in the Running
This recognition places The Kings Arms as the sole Birmingham establishment among the 16 categories of the annual awards. It will compete against venues from Leeds, Bristol, Dorset, Cheshire and Newcastle for the top honour.
Transformation by Davenports Brewery
Smethwick-based Davenports Brewery took over the venue in 2024, restoring its historic name after it had been known as The Crown. The refurbishment included the installation of large screens for sports viewing, the revival of a dedicated pool room, and the addition of dart boards alongside extra screens around the pool table.
Rich Sporting History
Research by Davenports uncovered the pub's long-standing connection to sport. In 1876, it featured a 'pleasure garden and croquet lawn', and by 1882, a covered American Bowling Saloon had been installed.
Awards Ceremony
The winners across all Great British Pub Awards categories will be announced at a ceremony at the First Direct Bank Arena in Leeds on September 23.
Black Country Success
While The Kings Arms is Birmingham's sole representative, the Black Country has several contenders. The Milestone in New Invention is shortlisted for Best Community Pub, the Cock N Bull Co in Stourbridge for Best Town Pub, and The Ashmore in Wolverhampton for Best Admiral Taverns Pub. Tamworth Tap is also in the running for Best Beer Pub.
Beyond Sport
The Kings Arms is currently showing the FIFA World Cup but offers more than just sports. It serves pub grub throughout the week, hosts live music nights and community events. On Sunday, July 26, it will host 'Kings Heath On Sea', a free family fun day from 11am to 5pm featuring fair rides, stalls, food, hook-a-duck, a play maze, kids entertainment and a face painter.
