Niall Treacy's Olympic Dream: From Solihull Rink to Milan Arena
Solihull speed skater Niall Treacy experienced a dramatic Olympic debut at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games, reaching his first-ever final in the short track 1000m event. Despite a collision that dashed his medal hopes, Treacy expressed immense pride in his achievement, marking a significant milestone in his career.
A Family Legacy and Tactical Mastery
Following in the footsteps of his brother Farrell, who competed in the same final at Beijing 2022, Treacy executed a precise tactical plan. Ranked 22nd globally and coming off a narrow fourth-place finish at the European Championships, he dominated from the front in both the quarter and semi-finals. This strategy allowed him to navigate through high-quality races and secure a spot in the coveted Olympic final.
The Chaotic Final and Collision
Short track speed skating is renowned for its drama and unpredictability, with athletes racing at speeds up to 40mph on a 110-meter ice track. In a crowded nine-skater final, Treacy attempted to maintain his front-running approach but collided with double Olympic medallist Shaoang Liu, causing him to fall. After a lengthy video review, he was ultimately placed ninth.
"It is not the result you want when you get to the final. I was skating really well," Treacy remarked. "I have only seen the review quickly. I didn’t see the guy, I felt like still trying to build speed. I had two of the best guys in front of me so I was trying to setup to cut to go back past them. I felt like I was in a really good position. I felt really strong."
Pride and Perspective
Despite the disappointment, Treacy highlighted the significance of his accomplishment. "It’s not the result [I wanted] but I think if you told me at the start of the day that I would be in an Olympic A final, I maybe wouldn’t have believed you. I am really proud of what I did today," he said. Reflecting on his journey, he added, "It’s not bad, from skating in Solihull to skating in Milan. Every race that you come into at an Olympics is absolutely solid. The guys field is so strong."
Medal Winners and British History
The gold medal in the 1000m event was claimed by Dutch skater Jens van 't Wout, with Korean defending champion Hwang Daeheon taking silver and Latvia's Roberts Kruzbergs securing a surprise bronze. Great Britain's last Olympic short track medal dates back to 1994, when Nicky Gooch won bronze in Lillehammer, while Wilf O'Reilly earned two golds at the 1988 Calgary Games as a demonstration sport.
Looking Ahead to Future Races
At 25 years old, Treacy will return to the Assagio Forum for the 500m event next Wednesday. Although this shorter distance is not his specialty, the experience of competing in a major final is expected to boost his confidence. "The quarter-finals felt like a final for me, the semi-finals felt like a final, that’s why I was over the moon. It would’ve been nice to finish it off but I am proud of what I did," he stated. "I hope the guys back home in the sport and watching were proud, I had a lot of fun."
