Aston Villa Linked with Manchester City Goalkeeper James Trafford
Aston Villa have been linked with a potential move for Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, as the club prepares for the annual summer speculation surrounding star keeper Emi Martinez and his future at Villa Park.
Martinez was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United last summer, with Atletico Madrid and other clubs also reportedly monitoring his situation. However, there is currently no strong indication that Martinez will leave the club this summer, especially with the possibility of Champions League football on the horizon.
Despite this, Villa are thought to be assessing their goalkeeper options as a precautionary measure, should any unexpected developments arise.
Trafford Emerges as a Target
According to reports from The Daily Mail, James Trafford, who serves as the understudy to Gianluigi Donnarumma at Manchester City, is a player that Aston Villa are keeping tabs on.
The 23-year-old recently made his debut for the England national team and fits the profile of a young player from whom Villa could extract exceptional value if they secure his signature. Additionally, Trafford would contribute to the home-grown player quota at the club.
Emery Addresses Martinez Injury
Unai Emery confirmed that Martinez experienced pain in his calf during the warm-up before Aston Villa's recent match against Nottingham Forest. The goalkeeper was unable to start the game, leading to a late call-up for backup keeper Marco Bizot.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Emery explained the situation: "He was telling us in the warm-up that he was not comfortable with his calf. He felt that it was painful. The most important thing is how Marco can respond to this circumstance. If he is ready like he is, and he was before, Marco Bizot is really fantastic."
Emery praised Bizot's performance, stating, "It is something that we need to understand, his pain. Just before the match he felt pain, so OK change. How Marco played today was fantastic. Marco Bizot is a fantastic goalkeeper. He has experience and he is intelligent."
When asked if he can still rely on Martinez, Emery responded, "My only focus is about trying to have a good response to the late change."
This development adds another layer to the ongoing narrative around Villa's goalkeeping department, blending immediate injury concerns with long-term strategic planning as the transfer window approaches.
