Warnock: Houllier 'Jealousy' Blocked Liverpool Return

Former Defender Claims Houllier Sabotaged Liverpool Return

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock has made a startling claim that a "jealous" Gerard Houllier deliberately blocked his return to Anfield from Aston Villa. The 44-year-old, who has also questioned Arne Slot's long-term prospects at Liverpool, alleges he was willing to accept a massive 50 per cent wage reduction to facilitate the transfer, but his desperate request was ultimately turned down.

A Promising Career Path Diverted

Warnock came through the prestigious ranks at Liverpool, featuring an impressive 67 times for the senior side before his eventual departure in 2007. Following a productive stint at Blackburn Rovers, he moved to Villa Park under the stewardship of the late Gerard Houllier, who had previously managed the mighty Reds. After relations deteriorated significantly between player and manager, the left-back formally requested a move away, with his beloved former club initially keen to secure his valuable services on a temporary basis.

The Dramatic Collapse of a Dream Move

Despite his clear willingness to significantly reduce his salary, the proposed emotional return to Merseyside collapsed spectacularly, with Warnock firmly holding Houllier personally responsible. Speaking candidly on In The Mixer, sponsored by Sky Bet, Warnock revealed the full, dramatic story. "So Gerard Houllier was the manager of Aston Villa, and I had a serious falling out with him," reports Liverpool.com. "I was basically put on the reserve team squad as punishment."

"Then Gary McAllister came to me, another assistant manager doing the manager's job, to deliver exciting news: 'Kenny Dalglish has been on the phone. He wants to re-sign you for Liverpool.'" The arrangement was thoughtfully planned to begin as a simple loan deal, potentially becoming a permanent move later. Warnock recalled his immediate, enthusiastic response: "Yeah, brilliant. Get it done." McAllister's wise advice to him was crystal clear: "It's the right thing for you. Go back and enjoy your football again."

Allegations of Professional Jealousy

"But I think there was a strong element of Gerard Houllier being jealous of the fact that I could go and play for Liverpool, and I could go back there and be genuinely happy. It's a bad look for any manager," Warnock alleged. "So they turned around at the very last minute and put, I think, a half-million-pound loan fee on the deal. Liverpool were understandably like, 'Hang about, you've just changed the goalposts completely.'"

"Anyway, the deal fell through completely, and I ended up sitting miserably in the reserves for the rest of the season. It was a total head loss for me. I mean, it got to the point where they had to move me off the reserve team pitch because I was booting balls angrily into the middle of their first-team training sessions out of sheer frustration."

Financial Sacrifice Rejected

Warnock emphasized the extent of his personal sacrifice. "When I was supposed to be going back to Liverpool, I said to them regarding the loan deal, 'Well, if we can make it work, chop my wages in half.' I was pleading, 'I'll take less money. I honestly don't care. Just let me go back and play for my club.' They were like, 'No, no, we simply can't do that.' That was Aston Villa saying that definitively."

"I was arguing, 'Yeah, you absolutely can. You're making half my wages back for doing nothing. Just let me go. And Liverpool are going to cover my wages there anyway.' They stubbornly wouldn't do it, and my dream return was dead."
