Wolves Midfielder Joao Gomes Emerges as Napoli's 'Main Target' for Summer Transfer
Wolverhampton Wanderers are facing a significant battle to retain midfielder Joao Gomes, as the Brazilian has emerged as a 'main target' for Italian giants Napoli this summer, according to reports from Italian news outlet Tuttomercatoweb.
Gomes, whose contract with Wolves expires in June 2030, is seeing his long-term future at Molineux cast into doubt amid mounting attention from European clubs. This development follows earlier transfer links during the January window, when Manchester United and Crystal Palace expressed interest, though no deals materialized before the deadline.
Wolves' Relegation Battle and Gomes' Future
Wolves, currently bottom of the Premier League table and in the relegation zone alongside Burnley and West Ham, are at serious risk of dropping to the Championship. This precarious position could influence Gomes' decision, as the 25-year-old Brazil international is unlikely to want to play in the second tier.
The midfielder has become one of Wolves' most prized assets since joining from Flamengo in 2022. He has made 119 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals, and previously played 122 games for Flamengo's first-team, netting four times. With 10 caps for Brazil, Gomes' pedigree is attracting top European interest.
Rob Edwards' Comments on Potential Exits
Wolves manager Rob Edwards addressed potential player departures earlier this winter, stating, "A lot of the lads want to try and maybe right some of the wrongs and want to help the club. They want to do well, of course for themselves, but for a football club as well. They really are genuinely all committed."
Edwards added, "That's not saying that no one's going to go, I'm not saying that, I've been consistent with that all the way through. But, it's not like people are banging the door down or trying to force anything. It's not the case." He emphasized that any transfers would be evaluated on an individual basis, only proceeding if deemed right for the club.
Wolves return to action with an away trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon, as they continue their fight to avoid relegation amidst growing speculation over Gomes' future.
