Paul Trollope Opens Up on Wolves' Unusual Atmosphere During Relegation Fight
Assistant head coach Paul Trollope has revealed that there is a peculiar sentiment surrounding Wolverhampton Wanderers at this moment. Despite the club languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table throughout his and manager Rob Edwards' tenure, there are clear signs of improvement and growth.
Progress Amidst Adversity
Since the beginning of the year, Wolves have shown a notable upturn in form, securing memorable victories against top-tier opponents such as Aston Villa and Liverpool. These results, combined with other favorable outcomes, have kept their hopes of avoiding relegation alive. Although the likelihood of dropping down remains high, the team has managed to carve out a fighting chance to stay in the top flight.
Trollope, who previously collaborated with Edwards at Luton Town, elaborated on the strange feeling among the coaching staff despite their precarious league position. In an interview with the official Wolves website, he stated, "I don't think there are many times when a team in our situation have been enjoying it as much as we have – because you shouldn't be enjoying it and because we're not enjoying the league position."
Building Spirit and Enjoyment
He emphasized that to extract the best performance from players, fostering motivation, spirit, fight, and togetherness on the pitch requires an element of enjoyment. Trollope believes the club is making significant strides in this area. "The results didn't start straight away, but there were performances that showed good promise and hopefully now, the results are following the performances," he added.
The assistant coach praised the group's spirit and the individual progression of players, attributing this to the staff and particularly to Rob Edwards as the leader. "The best thing for me is the spirit of the group, and the spirit that individual players have shown, and the progression that some have shown, which I think is testament to the staff, but especially to Rob – as the leader of the group – and what he has started to create here," Trollope remarked.
Crucial Run-In Ahead
Wolves are set to begin their final stretch of the season with a match against West Ham on Friday, followed by encounters with other relegation-threatened teams like Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United. The dream of survival is still within reach, but Trollope acknowledged that even if it doesn't materialize, the foundations have been laid for future success.
"Obviously, we're still hoping that the dream becomes a reality if we win the next game, then we win the game after that, and we keep ticking those boxes," he said. "But whatever happens, wherever we end up and whatever next season brings, I think it's really important the spirit we built continues, the good play and the processes we've built continue."
Rediscovering the Winning Feeling
Trollope highlighted the importance of recent home victories, particularly against Aston Villa and Liverpool, which he described as special evenings filled with passion and emotion. "The outpouring of passion was incredible and there was a lot of emotion in those celebrations. I think it showed how much people care and what we're trying to do, so that feeling of winning again will be very important for next season – whatever the outcome of this one," he concluded.
