Chris Davies outlines Birmingham City's goalkeeper plan with clear spending strategy
Birmingham City's goalkeeper plan: freebies and loans

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has outlined the club's approach to solving their goalkeeping shortage, confirming they will focus on free transfers and loan deals to preserve funds for strengthening the attack.

Goalkeeping gap after Beadle's departure

Blues have entered pre-season without a clear number one after last season's starter James Beadle returned to parent club Brighton & Hove Albion. The 21-year-old is expected to secure a fourth Championship loan, but Brighton are delaying a decision on his destination.

Ryan Allsop is set to start in goal for Friday's friendly against Huddersfield Town, with young prospects Brad Mayo and Will O'Sullivan completing the goalkeeping unit under coach Maik Taylor during the training camp in Portugal.

Market options and budget constraints

Despite a wealth of experienced Championship goalkeepers available this summer, Blues' financial limitations mean they are likely to pursue a low-cost option. The club was previously linked with free agent Illan Meslier, a two-time Championship winner, but he opted to join Premier League champions Arsenal as back-up.

Speaking candidly to BirminghamLive, Davies explained: "What we've done in that area is try to take a step back, look at everything that's out there in terms of availability and affordability. Are we going to have money to invest? It's probably going to be more needed at the top end of the pitch. We're more budgeting for a free or a loan in the goalkeeper position this season."

Davies confident of resolution

Davies acknowledged the delay regarding Beadle's future but expressed confidence the situation will be resolved soon. "James had a really solid season but there's been a bit of a delay with Brighton around him. That's something that will get sorted. I'm pretty sure that will get sorted soon," he added.

Birmingham City's first signing under Davies in his initial summer window was a goalkeeper, but the club now prioritizes attacking reinforcements as they prepare for the new season.
