Crystal Leisure Centre's Refurbished Pool Reopens for Easter Holidays

The beloved Crystal Leisure Centre in Stourbridge, a popular destination for families near Birmingham, has triumphantly reopened its swimming facilities just in time for the Easter holidays. Following essential refurbishment works that began earlier this year, the centre's iconic leisure pool is now ready to welcome back swimmers with enhanced attractions and improved energy efficiency.

A Nostalgic Destination Revitalized

First opened in March 1990, the Crystal Leisure Centre has long been a favourite day trip for Brummies, famously featuring a huge slide that extended around the building's exterior. Named in honour of Stourbridge's rich glassmaking heritage, the centre closed temporarily for comprehensive upgrades. The 25-metre swimming pool has been meticulously drained, repaired, cleaned, and refilled, while the leisure pool boasts refurbished water features, including its signature wave machine.

Visitors can now enjoy rapids, fan sprays, and a shallow 'beach' area, alongside tropical slides that have been revamped with hand-painted fish designs. Additionally, the changing rooms have been newly refurbished, with accessible changing places ensuring inclusivity for all guests.

Essential Maintenance Completed Ahead of Schedule

A spokesman for the centre confirmed that improvement works, including essential maintenance on the boiler system, have been successfully completed ahead of schedule. This work has enhanced water and air temperatures while boosting the centre's energy efficiency. The leisure pool reopened at 12pm on Friday, March 27, 2026, with the 25-metre pool and soft play area following on Monday, March 30. Swimming lessons are set to resume the week commencing Monday, April 13.

"We’re re-opening our facilities following improvement works," the spokesman stated. "This work has now been successfully completed ahead of schedule, and leisure pool swimmers can expect to make a splash in time for the Easter holidays!"

Future Investments and Council Commitment

Dudley Council has announced further plans to replace the centre's roof, initially scheduled for 2027/28 but now brought forward to the 2026/27 budget. The proposals include a full roof replacement, mechanical ventilation plant, and associated works, representing a significant investment to ensure the centre's longevity for decades to come.

Councillor Damien Corfield, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, expressed enthusiasm: "This is great news for our leisure centre users. The Crystal is a really popular centre and the leisure pool attracts people from across the region. We’re still at the early stages, but we’ve made a commitment to delivering these improvements a year ahead of schedule. This repair work is a significant investment by us and will ensure the lifetime of the centre for decades to come." The project is currently in the design stage, with procurement and start dates yet to be finalized.

Accessibility and Additional Amenities

Located just a 30-minute train ride from Birmingham Snow Hill to Stourbridge Junction, with a short connection to Stourbridge town centre, the Crystal Leisure Centre is easily accessible. Swimming sessions are priced at £6 for adults and £4.50 for children. Beyond the pools, the centre offers a soft play area, sports hall, gym, squash courts, dance studio, climbing room, and function rooms, making it a comprehensive leisure destination for all ages.

As families flock to the centre for Easter activities, this reopening marks a vibrant chapter in the community's recreational offerings, blending nostalgia with modern enhancements for an unforgettable swimming experience.
