This sponsored event, recognized as the world's largest annual pool-based fundraising swim, will take place from March 20-22 across nearly 500 venues regionally and nationwide.
Local Pools Hosting the Event
In Leicester, participants can dive in at several key locations, including:
- Aylestone Leisure Centre
- Braunstone Leisure Centre
- Wigston Pool and Fitness Centre
- Charnwood Leisure Centre in Syston
- Parklands Leisure Centre in Oadby
Since its inception in 1986, Swimathon has seen over 750,000 participants in the UK, raising more than £55 million for charitable causes. This year, organizers are inviting swimmers of all ages and abilities to join the celebration, with proceeds benefiting Cancer Research UK, the end-of-life charity Marie Curie, and the Swimathon Foundation.
Olympic Champion's Inspiring Words
Olympic gold medallist and Swimathon president, Duncan Goodhew, expressed his enthusiasm: "It's incredible to think that, for forty years, Swimathon has brought people together to enjoy the benefits of swimming and raise extraordinary sums for charity. Its success is testament to the loyal participants who return year after year, and to the new generation of swimmers now taking up the baton." He added a special message to Leicester residents: "To everyone in Leicester who has been part of our journey: thank you. And to those joining us for this milestone anniversary: good luck! I can't wait to see what the next 40 years have in store."
Diverse Challenges and Celebrity Support
Swimathon offers a range of individual challenges, from a 500m swim up to a supercharged Triple 5k. Teams of 2-5 people can also participate in relays of 1.5k, 2.5k, or 5k. For those unable to attend organized sessions, the MySwimathon option allows swimmers to choose their own distance, time, and venue between March 1-31.
The event has garnered support from numerous celebrities and athletes, including Ayo Akinwolere, Dr Ranj, Dermot O'Leary, Tim Lovejoy, Kate Thornton, Alice Dearing, Michael Gunning, Giles Long, Nell McAndrew, Cassandra Patten, Lauren Steadman, and BBC's Emily Steel, also known as Dynamite. What began as a local initiative to boost swimming participation has evolved into a beloved charitable force with widespread backing.
Charity Perspectives on the Impact
Paula Young, Cancer Research UK spokesperson for Leicestershire, highlighted the importance of fundraising: "With new technologies opening doors to new discoveries, we're living in a golden age of cancer research. But around 29,400 people are diagnosed with the disease every year in the East Midlands, so we must go further and faster. Fundraising events like Swimathon are vital to fuel more progress. Every length swum will help bring us closer to a world where everybody lives longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer. That's why we're urging first-timers and seasoned swimmers alike to take the plunge and be part of Swimathon's extraordinary legacy. Together we can power the next wave of cancer breakthroughs."
Hannah Grant, national events manager at Marie Curie, added: "This March, people can dive into a fun, new challenge and raise money for a great cause. There's only one chance to give someone the best possible end of life. That's why we're urging swimmers of all abilities to head down to their local pool to raise money and help Marie Curie bring expert end-of-life care to more people, whatever their illness."
