Foreign Office Issues Travel Warning as All Flights to Dubai Cancelled Until June
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a stark warning to UK travellers, advising against all but essential travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This comes as British Airways confirms the cancellation of all flights to Dubai until June 1, 2026, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Widespread Flight Disruptions Across the Region
British Airways has extended its cancellations to include routes to Amman, Bahrain, Dubai, and Tel Aviv up to and including May 31. Flights to Doha in Qatar have also been scrapped until April 30. The airline cited "continuing uncertainty of the situation in the Middle East and airspace instability" as the primary reasons for these measures.
The FCDO warns that "regional escalation poses significant security risks and has led to travel disruption." This advisory underscores the severe impact of the ongoing conflict, which has forced the closure of key Middle Eastern hubs like Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi, stranding tens of thousands of passengers globally.
Impact on Birmingham and Alternative Travel Options
Birmingham Airport (BHX) has not been spared from the chaos, with scores of flights cancelled over the past three weeks. In response to the disruptions, British Airways is operating additional flights to and from Singapore and Bangkok to meet rising demand on these alternative routes.
The airline stated, "We are keeping the situation under constant review and are directly in touch with affected customers to offer them a range of options." Passengers with bookings on Emirates Airlines between February 28 and April 15 can request refunds or re-book their journeys online, though refunds may take up to 15 days to process.
Broader Implications for Holidaymakers
This travel shake-up threatens to ruin holidays for many UK tourists, highlighting the broader instability in global air travel. The FCDO's advisory against non-essential travel to the UAE adds a layer of urgency for those planning trips, urging caution and flexibility in travel arrangements.
As the situation evolves, airlines and airports continue to monitor developments closely, aiming to minimise further disruptions and assist stranded passengers.
